Asian Elephants

This is the largest living mammal in Asia. They are heavily hunted by poachers for their tusks, and these deaths also coincide with the 1300 that were killed in the last decade by accident due to habitat loss. All species are now on the endangered red list with 2 elephants dying per day. The population has fallen 50% in 75 years and if the figures continue they will be extinct in 60 years.

The AWF projects:
Sri Lanka:
The AWF collaboration with the Milleniun Elephant Foundation is a flagship project for this species. In addition to working with the Asian Elephant in Sri Lanka itself, we'll be using the collaboration as a base to develop conservation projects elsewhere in Asia.

Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam:

Asian Elephant projects under consideration in each of these countries.
