Ghana

The house will give us an operational capacity of around 30 volunteers and we see this as our main base in West Africa, servicing projects in Sierra Leone, Cape Verde, The Gambia and, potentially, elsewhere. Ghana is a stable country, very friendly, with sound infrastructure -so electricity, drainage and water are all available along with pizzas, internet and air conditioning!!! There is a lot of competition with airlines so flights from the UK start at under Pounds 300 return!!! Connecting flights to other West African states through such as Air Kenya are also reasonable.

To develop education provision in Ghana
The AWF has the capacity to deliver UK accredited educational programmes at its bases globally and will be looking at possible courses to deliver in Ghana at no cost to local people.

The AWF is negotiating for the construction of an 80 bed Field Study centre in Ghana with a spectacular design to be replicated at its centres around the world. It is hoped to have the sites operational at centres on four continents for 2012/2013 academic year.

The AWF will be funding the positioning of a PhD student through Manchester Metropolitan University in West Africa based in Ghana (focus on land use of deforested lands)

Development of Eco Tourism capacity
The AWF believes in the huge possibilities of using eco tourism as an income driver for economic development. To this end it is currently funding the employment of a local guide to take AWF volunteers throughout Ghana to catalogue natural and cultural attractions, identify appropriate- local- accommodations and develop robust and 'true' eco tourism itineraries. This work will be a continuing aspect of AWF work in Ghana and will be reflected through its various websites promoting eco tourism.

Identification of conservation initiatives that the AWF can collaborate with
Ghana is a country rich in a variety of eco systems from oceans to huge lakes, rainforest to Savannah and everything in between. Whilst surveying the country, AWF volunteers will identify local projects through which effective collaborations can be forged.

About Ghana
In 1957 Ghana gained its independence from the United Kingdom and is now considered one of the few politically stable countries in West Africa. With a population of 24 million the country enjoys a rich artistic heritage which symbolises the peoples' identity and history.

It is situated close to the equator and experiences a tropical equatorial climate, consistently hot all year round with seasonal rains. It’s wildlife parks and national reserves support a wide range of vibrant wildlife including large mammals, primates, Nile crocodiles, a large variety of birds and some 400 species of butterflies. The endangered Bongo, a subspecies of antelope, can be found in the dense tropical undergrowth regions of Ghana. Population decline is due to a range of factors which include hunting and sports, impoverished genetic diversity and human pressures on their habitat.
