volunteering - funding collaboration - eco-tourism
Sri Lanka has one of the richest biodiversities on earth and is home to countless endemic species. Its people are highly educated and sensitive to their environment and they seem to co-exist with nature- it’s a predominantly Budhist society. But it is a poor country, hugely due to the debilitating effects of a prolonged and pointless civil war in the north of the island and, of course, devastated by the tsunami disaster from which it is struggling to recover. The combined effect of both factors has been to bring this resource rich amazing country to its knees…..but, the people are passionate, intelligent, educated, environmentally aware- they don’t need direction but they do need our support.
Below we list a number of projects through which support can be given. Do this direct or through us, all we ask is that you let us know what you are doing- to inspire others and ensure transparency. We are hugely indebted to the Support Sri Lanka Foundation for their networking assistance and many of the humanitarian projects listed are through them and more information can be found on these through their web site.
We have also put together an eco tourism package to explore this amazing country and in the process fund conservation and humanitarian projects of your choice, and meet the amazing people making things happen on the ground.

The Leopard Project:
Anjali and Andrew are both highly educated and intelligent human beings. They have spent many years gaining conservation experience in the field and are capable of commanding good salaries in the global conservation marketplace BUT they they have elected to use their experience and education to help save the Sri Lankan leopard and its habitats. They do this knowing they will have to beg and borrow to keep themselves in body and soul adn raise money for the leopard project. They are passionate and motivated and determined but they need help. our help.

Village construction, Baticoloa province
Mr Hizbullah is a highly intelligent and motivated individual, achieving ministerial office in the Sri Lankan government at the youngest age ever. He has survived (LTTE) assasination attempts and is determined to help peoples in the muslim communities in the east from where he comes- they are not getting help to the degree it is being handed out elsewhere in the country and many still live in refugee camps. Help this courageous and inspirational individual build a new village for tsunami victims.
Friendship Primary School at Arasadithottam , Nintavur, Eastern Province
This school was built through international aid following the tsunami but there is insufficient funding for teachers- Pounds 50pw would support two teachers (English and IT) to help staff the last two remaining classrooms. This needs an on going but modest commitment that will bring huge benefits to the local communities involved.
Polhena Padmirama Temple Infants School, Matara
As with the above project a very modest but continuing support will fund teachers for this educational facility
Paramulaa_ Pamburama Maternity Clinic, Matara province
This is
an opportuntity to work with local women's groups to make a real difference to the quality of their lives by building and running a local maternity facility for pregnant women, currently there is nothing!? The project organiser, a highly respected member of the local community is truly inspirational and has worked tirelessly to help rebuild following the tsunami
Elephant Transit Home Born Free Foundation
The Born Free Foundation has identified this Sri Lankan governmental programme as the most worthwhile elephant rehabilation programme in the country- it exists solely to take injured and orphaned elephants and rehabilitate them into the wild (Uda Walare national park) and it has a 100% success rate in so doing. They are hugely underfunded and support for the programme can best be directed through the BornFree Foundation
Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Society (SLWCS):
Read Ravi Coreas introduction on the underlying visions and philosophy of this organisation-inspirational!

Turtle Conservation Project Tangalla
There are a great many turtle 'projects' in Sri Lanka but this one is now working closely with the Sri Lankan government to ensure proper scientific procedures in release programmes (many of which condemn released hatchlings to certain death). It is also developing educational materials for other turtle projects.
Rainforest Rescue International:
There is only 2% of Sri Lanka's indigenous rain forest left and this project is fighting to save it (and other endangered habitats) through local educational programmes and land purchase programmes- they need support.
Sinharja Forest reserve creating a jungle corridor
