    About Peru

    Peru 2

The Republic of Peru is located in western-south America, it is home to one of the oldest civilisations in the world, the Norse Chico, and the Inca Empire. The Spanish colonized the area in the 16th century but the country achieved Independence in 1821. The Peruvian population is around about 21.5 million and is multiethnic. Although the main spoken language is Spanish there is still a large number of native people that speak Quechua. The contry is divided into three geographical regions by the Andes - the coastline that faces the Pacific ocean, the highlands and the jungle which is a wide area of flat terrain enclosed by the Amazon and its rivers.

Within Peru there are over 1,800 species of birds (120 which are endemic ), 500 species of mammals (70 endemic ) and over 300 species of reptiles (100 endemic). The country has over 53 naturally protected areas put in place by the government to secure the survival and longevity of these species. However, many areas of Peru are still threatened by uncontrolled settlement of lowland areas, mining, logging, poorly planned roads and infrastructure development.
