FULLY FUNDED Marine and Conservation Research Programmes
There are eight research positions on offer, two in each of the below areas. Based in Tenerife and building on thirty years of continuous data collection with resident and migratory whales and dolphins, we are looking for eight individuals to acquire the skills and experience necessary to take our methods to cetacean projects across the Atlantic Ocean Cetacean Network (AOCN) and further afield- Pink River Dolphins in Colombia, Blue Whales in Sri Lanka, Humpback Whales in Sao Tome and Uruguay, Right Whales in Argentina etc. We are looking for people who want to make a real difference, who are prepared to train themselves in our methods and who are ready to be deployed globally to disseminate our skills and experience to where they are most needed.
Successful applicants will receive extensive training and, importantly experience, in working with our methodologies, full board accommodation and all equipment together with access to our volunteer programme on the island- activities, trekking, fiestas, full moon parties either free or at heavily discounted prices. Our knowledge of the island, gained over thirty years continuous activity is unparalleled.
Areas:
Photo Identification -Two positions: We have thirty year’s continuous data sets on Resident Short Finned Pilot Whales (we are tracking 13 families) and the ‘local’ Bottlenose Dolphin family, as well as on migratory species including Fin Whales, Orca, Beaked whales and, in total, 28 species, over a third of all cetacean species. Currently our focus is on identifying family structures in the 13 pilot whale families we follow and on understanding interactions between the different families.
Acoustics- Two positions: We use hydrophones on some whale watching boats and on our own private rib. Our focus is resident Short Finned Pilot Whales and the local Bottlenose Dolphin community. We have identified family dialects and want to explore how these evolve over time. We are particularly keen to use the work and experience gained to work with Humpback whales later in the year in Uruguay and Sao Tome.
Land based observation- Two positions: We aim to liaise with the whale watching boats we work with in developing land based management programmes that minimise the impact of whale watching boats on cetaceans visited. We are also monitoring the impact of ferries and pleasure craft, particularly jet skis, on cetacean behaviour.
Sublittoral- Two positions: We will train successful candidates with PADI Open Water and PADI Scientific Diver (A course developed by the AWdF) and then facilitate baseline data collection with sea grasses (in collaboration with a global sea grass conservation group), a sea horse colony, invasive black urchins, and fish species, and monitor water quality and sediment pollution.
Skills and experiences gained will be deployed across the AOCN (Atlantic Ocean Cetacean Network) and further afield. We will be working with cetaceans in 13 countries across the world this year and want to be in a position to offer our expertise.
Full Position Brief
Who are we: The AWdF has been collaborating with the whale watching industry of Tenerife, the third largest such industry in the world, for some 30 years. We work on research, education and conservation programmes and many tens of thousands of young people from across the world have benefited from the low cost opportunities made available, many of whom are now in prominent positions in education, conservation and research.
The AWdF has developed a number of other programmes over the years on the island:
* Eco Tourism
* Film & Photography
* Trekking
* Animal Rescue
See websites: www.whalenation.org
www.fairearthfoundation.org
Participants will be able to access these programmes whilst with us.
The AWdF provides a huge range of free or heavily discounted activities from scuba diving to
surfing, trekking to horse riding…………to its volunteers. We work hard to give our volunteers the best
experience possible.
The AWdF is carrying out cetacean work in thirteen countries and expanding fast. We are at the
centre of the AOCN , the Atlantic Ocean Cetacean Network, some 3-400 cetacean organisations across
the Atlantic Oceans
The AWdF is committed to providing low cost accessible opportunities to young people globally, we
are building mindfulness programmes into all our work and we work with our volunteers to help build
meaningful careers and lives. We are first and foremost a volunteering run and driven organisation.
