➢ Eight full-time paid positions available in 4 different areas of research
➢ Minimum 2 months training and experience based in Tenerife with the expectation that successful applicants will use this knowledge in different research projects around the world to gain further experience (Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Jamaica, Belize, Guyana, Cape Verde,
Madeira, El Hierro/La Gomera, South Africa, Sao Tome, Nigeria, Sri Lanka).

Our expectations of successful applicants:
● Complete all training and inductions.
● Read all training manuals and relevant scientific research papers. Convey understanding of these topics to research mentors.
● Help in weekly tasks of monitoring and data collection on our 4 research platforms:
○ Land-based station - monitoring cetacean behaviour with and without boats present.
○ RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) - incorporating passive acoustic monitoring, recording cetacean behaviour and photo identification.
○ Whale watching boats - centred around photo identification, recording cetacean behaviour, and raising public awareness amongst tourists.
○ Subliteral - monitor baseline data collection with seagrasses (in collaboration with a global seagrass conservation group), a sea horse colony, invasive black urchins, and fish species, and monitor water quality and sediment pollution.
● Accurately collect, store, back up and analyse research data
● Meet weekly goals set out by the research mentor.
● Work towards a personal research paper with the research mentor. The personal project must be in line with the outcomes of our research programme.
● Take part in daily reflection meetings, which are a vital part of our experiential learning process.
● Take part in workshops to continually improve and learn as the placement proceeds
● Become an expert in using DSLR cameras, telescopes/binoculars for land-based research and hydrophones.
● Get involved with our outreach programme helping to communicate our scientific data to the general public.
● All of our long-term interns will be an integral part of the research team and also help with the running of the volunteer programme:
○ Helping to train new volunteers so that they are comfortable with methodologies and protocols
○ Lead teams of volunteers out in the field - on the research vessel, land-based station or during sublittoral data collection
○ Help with daily running of the volunteer programme, i.e. cleaning schedule, organising volunteer time, looking after research
equipment
○ Help with any additional events, social media or marketing needs of the research programme.
○ Aid the research team in weekly and monthly presentations of research data to the rest of the AWdF team.
○ Help with maintenance of research equipment.
Who are we: The AWdF has been collaborating with the whale-watching industry of Tenerife, the third largest such industry in the world, for some 30 years. We work on research, education and conservation programmes, and many tens of thousands of young people from across the world have benefited from the low-cost opportunities made available, many of whom are now in prominent positions in education, conservation and research.

The AWdF provides free or heavily discounted activities on a huge range from scuba diving to surfing, trekking to horse riding…………to its volunteers. We work hard to give our volunteers the best experience possible.
The AWdF is carrying out cetacean work in thirteen countries and expanding fast. We are at the centre of the AOCN , the Atlantic Ocean Cetacean Network, and some 3-400 cetacean organisations across the Atlantic Oceans.
The AWdF is committed to providing low-cost, accessible opportunities to young people globally. We are building mindfulness programmes into all our work, and we work with our volunteers to help build meaningful careers and lives. We are, first and foremost, a volunteering organisation.
